The Island Table Tennis team for the Island Games due to be held in Guernsey in 2023, after being postponed owing to Covid, has just been announced. 

8 players will represent the Island, boasting a combination of youth and experience.  The Island has a rich history in Island Games table tennis; Team Isle of Wight has won 22 gold medals since 1987.  Last time out, the team achieved a silver in mixed doubles, a bronze in individual men’s and a bronze in men’s doubles.

George Downing, who has been playing professional table tennis abroad, is considered the Island’s most likely medal hopeful. The squad began its rebuilding job at the Gibraltar games and it’s hoped the progression will continue in Guernsey.

Dan Burns, the Table Tennis Team Manager said:

“I am delighted to announce that the team has been selected to represent the Island at the next Island Games in Guernsey.  Congratulations to all the players selected.  Let’s go TEAM IOW.”

Men:  George Downing, Scott Lawson, Hugh Idle and Danny Burns

Dan Burns, a 9-time Island Games gold medallist, has said:

 “We’ll be considered outsiders for a team medal but we’ll give it our absolute best. The squad have all enjoyed good seasons so we go in good form.”

Dan said of medal prospect George Downing:

  “He is by far our strongest player and a fantastic addition to the team. He’s in with a real chance of a gold medal if he plays to the best of his ability.”
